摘要

Speaker's Brief Introduction:
Prof Gerald S Buller was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1965. He graduated with BSc (Hons) Natural Philosophy from the University of Glasgow in 1986 and PhD in Physics from Heriot–Watt University in 1989. In 1990, Prof Buller became Lecturer in Physics at Heriot–Watt University, was promoted to Reader in 2000 and made a Professor in 2006. In parallel, Prof Buller co–founded TeraHertz Photonics Ltd. in 1998 and founded Helia Photonics Ltd. in 2002. Prof Buller heads a group of around eight researchers and is Principal Investigator on a number of major research projects funded by EPSRC, the European Union and industry. In 2010, Professor Buller was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. He was elected a Fellow of the Institute of Physics in 2002 and elected a Fellow of the Optical Society of America in 2017.
Dr Aurora Maccarone’s initial love for physics stemmed from a trip to the laboratory with her aunt, who is a physicist that studied cosmic rays, and being fascinated by what she saw. Aurora embarked upon the equivalent of a Masters degree at the University of Palermo, Sicily, in Italy before she moved to Scotland to undertake a PhD in single-photon depth imaging with Professor Gerald Buller, at Heriot-Watt University. Following that, she held several postdoctoral positions at Heriot-Watt, including one with Professor Alessandro Fedrizzi on single-photon detector arrays for Quantum Key Distribution applications and another with Professor Gerald Buller on underwater quantum imaging. She subsequently obtained a Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellowship which she started in October 2020, at Heriot-Watt University.
